Set Induction in Simulated Teaching

Importance of Set Induction

I think set induction is a very important stage in opening the correct schemata and getting the students interest. A poor and outdated strategy might be boring to our students; in contrast, an attractive and interesting strategy will help us to get our student attention easily. We are now in our fourth semester, we have learned different types of skills or strategies that we can use in our micro teaching or simulated teaching for the set induction stage. For example, playing a song, telling a story, write the main topic on the board and ask students to think about the topic, playing game, or let them watch a short animation flash.

In the previous simulated teaching, I feel bored about some of the set induction, but I think some are very interesting that I can learn from them. I think getting student to move around can consider more interesting strategy. I remember one of my course mate set induction clearly. Min Hui asked student to play games in her set induction, many people like to play. She got four volunteers. She is also encourages the students to join the games by giving out present to the winner, I think this is also a strategies that I can use in the future because the people who plays game always expecting some reward. Hezelynn is the winner in her game, she was happy showing her reward to others. The whole activity not only involved the few people in front but the whole class was excited.

I agree with you that set induction is a very important stage in opening the correct schemata and getting the students interest. Set induction can also get the student’s attention in what you are going to teach. There are many ways in presenting the set induction but I wonder how far can this really work if the school doesn’t have the equipment and high technology for us to show the short animation flash. Other than that, I feel it’s good to ask the students to move around but sometimes it’s hard for the teacher to control such a large class. In Malaysia, there is around forty students in a class. There is also disadvantage of playing games based on your example because not every student in the class can involve in it. So, the rest will feel boring and lose interest in it. Hence, I think we can design a game that can be played by everyone.

Yeah I agree with you that the opening stage play an important role in a lesson plan. Once you fail to attract students, maybe they will not listen to your class for the next lesson. Recently, I do feel that my friends are giving us a lot of lame set induction such as showing a picture and showing some slide. This really make the class fall asleep. As a teacher, we are not to be knowledgeable, but also creative. We must create creative activities to attract students and built up their interest to the subject. We also have to be friendly but a bit strict, so that students will listen to us and pay full attention while we are teaching.

Yes, i strongly agree with Sapphire that Set Induction is very important. Set Induction not only serve as a tool in helps the student in opening the correct schemata and most importantly it also function as a form of attraction to gain the students attention. in a classroom a teacher needs to gather the students attention so that the message of the lesson could be transmitted successfully. Besides that, when the students are paying attention from the very beginning, it is much more easier for the teacher to control the class compared to a class which the teacher have very little control over the students. So it is good that we have a new and better set induction rather then the same old ones where our students are already get bored with...

Yes, I truly agree on Sapphire's view about how important set induction is to our teaching. A poor outdated stategy might be boring to our students wehave been exposed to many attractive and interesting ones over the years. So based on that, we should now have learned the different types of skills and strategies in order to grab our students attention. Nevertherless, all the activities carried out in class too should be as interesting to the set induction. The teacher should not take lightly about the level of the students proficiency. The teacher should provide worksheets which meets the students level otherwise students will feel uncomfartable beause they are unable to do the task.
